In this university module, we were put into groups of 6 and we made Mage Mail, themed around processing items for the postal service, creating a chaotic and exciting experience. This game won 3rd place in the PitStop Award for Game Audio at Game Republic.
My Responsibilities
- Managing the team of 6: making sure assigned tasks were kept up to date and manageable.
- Developing the game's concept: working with the team's other designer to solidify concepts and plans for gameplay including game loops, mechanics, narrative and UX.
- Creating levels: designing and set-dressing environments that promote teamwork and chaos.
- Creating UI for the game: designing and implementing thematic UI, Along with making materials in engine.
- Adding Audio: sourcing, editing and implementing sound effects and music for the entire game, creating a busy but not overwhelming atmosphere.
- Creating VFX: designing, making and implementing VFX, adding life to machines and interactions.
- Improving player experience: making sure that interacting with the game was appealing by adding appropriate and predictable feedback to the player.
Design Rationale
This university module was over 8 weeks, which meant the scope had to be scalable to fit my team's work speed and ability.
The original idea was thought of by the team's other designer and greatly developed by the two of us, resulting in the final product and associated IP. The project was inspired by the gameplay feel of the Overcooked series, with interactions and themes inspired by Keywe. We made sure to keep the systems and mechanics to a scalable structure, which came in handy during the development process. Towards the end of development, we had plans to implement the collection of a "tax" on certain items, but had to cut it due to time constraints.
